Social Networking Deluge!
I avoid MySpace because at my age I fear it would seem pervy. However, I established my profile on LinkedIn a year or two ago and it has been very valuable for my career and my ability to do my job on a daily basis. (Relationships are important in my line of work.) I was also invited to join Facebook recently and admittedly it is nice to have a "friendly" place to network as well where I can goof around, be expressive, and so on. So I am a fan of social networking technology, Web 2.0, etc.
Since then the floodgates have opened! I've been invited to Spock, Bebo, Naymz, TripIt, Plaxo, and just now, NotchUp. It is a lot of work to network, or "hang out" on these sites.
I also suspect these social networking sites are fairly insidious in their ability to gather personal data about us. Facebook knows, for example (because I stupidly told it) that I am currently in Toronto as well as my favorite books, movies, my birthday, my friends, their favorite books, where they are right now, etc. If you've had a marketing role or have a respect for the goals of that profession, then you know how valuable this data is.
But I willingly feed the marketing machine that is Facebook because it is nice to keep up with friends. But I cannot maintain 7 sites, and that list is growing. When will Google step in, buy up all these sites and combine us into one networking tool? And who would have imagined how successfully these sites have been in monetizing our circles of friends and colleagues.... My hat is off to them.

He couldn't get a haiku published, apparently
My name seems silly

poet who lived here.
